While most of the United States sits and debates about health care and figuring out how to get everyone involved and treated a charitable organization has already taken the step to provide affordable health care to children. The Shriners Hospitals for Children works to provide health care for children who have treatable conditions.
There are currently 22 non-profit hospitals run by the Shriners in the United States. There are various Shriners Hospitals for Children located in Canada and Mexico also. The mission of the Shriners is to treat any child who is suffering from conditions such as burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft pallets regardless of the ability of the family to pay. If the family is able to pay they pay and if not they are not forced to pay for the health care.
To be a patient at the Shriners Hospital for Children you must be under the age of 18 and have a condition that is considered treatable to some degree. The injury must also fall under one of the categories of burns, spinal cord or cleft pallets. Anyone can go to Shriners Hospital for Children and they will not be turned away regardless of race, religion or having any type of association to the Shriners organization.
The reason that the health care can be provided regardless of ability to pay is because the hospital operates as a research and educational facility. This means that many of the treatments are used for research purposes or for educational purposes for nurses, doctors or other health care professionals. This keeps the cost down to some extent. Another reason is that the Shriners run various charitable events throughout the year that allows all funds from these events to go directly to the hospital and care of the children in need.
If you are looking for a charitable organization to donate money to that helps provide health care for children in need, consider the Shriners Hospital.
