GLOBAL SERVICE: On September 24-26, 2003, the Global Service Institute (GSI) at Washington University in St. Louis hosted an international symposium to assess and critique the state of knowledge about national service programs worldwide. GSI is a research initiative of the Center for Social Development. Over 60 individuals including researchers, policy-makers and funders from 28 countries attended the symposium. This guide examines why funders have invested in the infrastructure for volunteer resources, and includes some good checklists for funders interested in helping their grantees develop and strengthen their volunteer resources.
